SHADOW DOCTOR (2021)

Years in the making, this is the true story of writer Peter Calloway's grandfather, Nathaniel Calloway, a Black man who graduated from medical school in the early 1930's. Unable to get work at any Chicago hospitals because he was Black, and unable to secure a loan from a bank to start his own practice because he was Black, he turned to another source of money in Prohibition-era Chicago: the Mafia, run by none other than Al Capone. As Calloway himself says, "On the one hand, his story represents the promise of Ameri-ca. On the other hand, it shows the worst of it."

All Nathaniel wanted was a job as the qualified Doctor he is. A way to prove his worth to the world.  He knew asking for money from the mob was a deal with the Devil, but what choice did he have?  If he didn't, it meant failure.  And that would prove everyone else right. So, he was willing to go back to the life he had left behind.  He was willing to sign on the Devil's dotted line. If, of course, Al Capone was willing to have him.

The attempt on Capone's life ignited a bloody battle between the Italians of Chicago.  With war now raging, Nathaniel was realizing what he was: a tool.  One to be used to patch up the gang-sters he knew would kill again. He wants out, wants to undo what he's done...until a knock on his door changes everything.

Nathaniel's work for Al Capone's mafia is far from over, but now Nathaniel wants out. Can he settle his debts and get away from Scarface?
