Robot + Girl (2024)

A new all-ages adventure from Mike White, creator of Penguin Random House's acclaimed graphic novel series Mellybean! A robot on the brink of obsolescence wanders aimlessly through the city ready to give up on "life" and donate himself for spare parts, until a girl stumbles across his broken, discarded body. In appreciation of her compassion and empathy, the robot attempts to help the girl out with a financial windfall. However, unbeknownst to him, his procurement of funds brings unwanted conflict with the powers that be. As the girl tries to fix the robot's ethical oversight, he gets apprehended by unknown assailants and must now fight for the life he once wanted to give up on if he ever wants to see his newfound friend again.

In this issue, Girl (aka Mari) takes Robot (aka ARRA) to her home to fix him up and they get acquainted. ARRA observes Mari's day-to-day routine, and they exchange views on having a purpose and doing random acts of kindness

Back at Mari's apartment, ARRA learns how Mari manages to make money to pay for food and shelter.  He learns that she too had been replaced in her line of work due to technological advances that made her skills obsolete, so ARRA gets an idea for how he might be able to help ease her financial troubles and puts it into action while she is asleep.

A.R.R.A.'s plan to help Mari financially is a success; However, this has put them in the sights of the authorities and Mari must negotiate a proposal to keep her from being arrested. Now, in order to maintain her innocence and freedom, she is faced with an impossible challenge that she'll need A.R.R.A.'s help to accomplish.

A.R.R.A. and Mari burn the midnight oil practicing for the tournament that will determine their freedom. Eventually, Mari crashes from exhaustion and A.R.R.A. ventures out alone to get her some food while she sleeps. Inside the restaurant he catches the attention of two unidentified and ominous-looking goons who follow him back to Mari's apartment.

Mari embarks on a mission to find A.R.R.A. leading her to an unsavory part of town where she breaks into a seemingly abandoned warehouse discovering that it is full of abducted robots being exploited for their power.

Mari is pushed to the edge and does something she never thought she ever could, setting events in motion that cannot be undone. A.R.R.A. and Mari run for their lives, but after this slight to the Robot Gladiator League and their high-stakes gambling patrons, will they be running for the rest of their lives?

Tensions rise as Mari's rescue of A.R.R.A. and disruption of the Robot Gladiator League has put a bounty on her head from the mafia.
