Description
Phoo Action
PHOO ACTION: SILVER JUBILEE is a comprehensive book that traces the trajectory of the cult sensation from its beginnings to its lasting impact. Curated by Mat Wakeham, co-author of PHOO ACTION, the book showcases the evolution of the project. The journey begins with the Get the Freebies comic strip, which was originally published in the UK magazine The Face from 1996 to 1997. It then moves on to the 2008 PHOO ACTION BBC pilot and beyond. Mat Wakeham meticulously assembles the content of the book, providing forewords that serve as an oral history of the project's development. PHOO ACTION introduces readers to the characters Whitey Action and Terry Phoo. Whitey is a cynical teenager and a profanity-laden heroine, while Terry is a bumbling kung-fu super cop. Together, they engage in a two-person war against the mutant Freebies gang, led by a flamboyant and eccentric crime boss with a basketball for a head. The comic embodies the essence of counter-culture superhero chic and hyperactive pre-millennial angloism. For the first time, PHOO ACTION: SILVER JUBILEE collects the entire 12-part Get the Freebies comic in English. Additionally, the book features a new cover piece by artist Hewlett, marking the 25th anniversary of Terry and Whitey. It also includes a never-before-seen introductory comic for a planned second season that was never produced. Mat Wakeham complements the comic with a prose novel that outlines the rest of the chapters. Original illustrations by iconic comic artist Philip Bond (known for works like The Invisibles and Kill Your Boyfriend) enhance the prose novel. The book also showcases unseen development and character artwork from Hewlett, offering fans a definitive and exhaustive timeline of this cult masterpiece.
